Meeting #13: Beyond Book Club Miami
April 7, 2022 – April 10, 2022

BBC Miami was the book club’s 13th meeting – and it took place the weekend of April 7 – 10, 2022. It was sun-drenched, warm, and wonderful. As usual, everyone began arriving Thursday, and once they congregated at their hotel, kicked off the weekend together. Missing was one Max Goodman, who underwent a travel saga you would hope no one ever has to deal with. Multiple canceled flights, a backup flight to Key West, and a 3-hour Uber drive from there to Miami. He handled it with grace (and a lot of stress) and by Friday evening, he was able to join the group at dinner in fun and stylish Wynwood.

On Friday, the first of the two book discussions was on “Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea” by Barbara Demick. A fascinating and complex work of investigative journalism and non-fiction that resulted in a lengthy and in depth discussion. During the day, the group then explored little Havana, hung out poolside, and walked / explored the Wynwood walls. That night the gents bounced around some fun local bars and took in some live music.

Saturday came around, and it was time for the second book discussion! Next up was “Homeland Elegies” by Ayad Akhtar – a nuanced exploration of the immigrant experience, family, and the way they all intersect with political forces. The group congregated by the pool to have this discussion under the Miami sun.

After the second book discussion, the book club ventured out for a fun surprise activity, something a little different than their usual fare. They attended a day of horse racing at Gulfstream Park, north of the city. Somehow they never ended up visiting Miami Beach, but something tells me the group will be back. The horses ran, the boys cheered, (in some fun, flashy matching shirts might I add) and a good time was had by all. They even got to meet one of the winning jockies! That night, they had a wonderful dinner downtown, and explored Miami’s fun & happening nightlife once again.

Sunday, time for departures. The less said about ensuing travel disruptions, the better. But it was another great weekend for the book club, full of great weather and great memories.
