Meeting #11: Beyond Book Club Zoom/Boston
October 2, 2020 – October 4, 2020

Unsurprisingly, 2020 posed challenges for the book club. With the pandemic and everything that came along with it, we opted to make the official book club virtual. An understandable move during a time that was tough on everyone. However, the ability to video chat and connect with each other from all around the country helped to soften the blow of not being able to get the full club together. That, and the Northeastern members of the book club (Max, Carlos, Billy, Alex, Chris V.) were fortunate enough to be able to drive up to Boston together to have an informal gathering. We were also fortunate enough to be joined by some of the book club’s significant others: Katie Sussman, Marie Vasseur, Emily O’Brien, and friend of the club, Henry Hayes!

The drive up from NYC was punctuated by a well worth it stop in New Haven, CT for some classic New Haven pizza.

After filling the car up with as much pizza as we could carry, we made our way up to Boston. The highlight of the weekend was touring through Cambridge and exploring the Harvard campus. We also wandered along the Charles River and enjoyed all the great Boston breweries in the fine fall weather.

And of course – we all got on Zoom together to discuss the books (The Nickel Boys, by Colson Whitehead, and Beautiful Boy, by David Sheff). Two profoundly moving novels that we all took a lot away from.

Although we couldn’t all be together in person, we made the best of it, and had a great weekend in Boston while still getting to sit down and discuss the books.
